Booking accommodation without surprises: a practical guide

Booking accommodation in a village isn't like booking with a chain: you often deal with people, not reception desks, and the rules vary from house to house. That's part of the charm — and the reason it's worth checking four things before paying.
Exact location, not municipality
"In Potes" can mean on the square or 6 km up a dirt track. Neither is bad — it depends on your plan — but you need to know beforehand. Ask for the exact location or the map link, and check how to get there: there are wonderful houses you'd rather not drive up to at night in fog.
What's really included
The three questions that avoid 90% of upsets: is heating included or paid separately (common in winter with wood or oil)? Are sheets and towels provided? Is your pet allowed — not "pets" in general, yours?
Ask in writing. A serious owner answers quickly and clearly; a vague answer before you pay is the best warning sign there is.
Cancellation: read it before, not after
Very different policies coexist among accommodation: from free cancellation to non-refundable prepayment. There is no "normal" — so the terms rule. Before paying, be clear until what date you can cancel free of charge and how much you lose afterwards.
If the plan depends on the weather (snow, rivers, hiking with children), favour accommodation with flexible cancellation even if it costs a little more. It's cheap insurance.
The price per night
Compare the total price of the stay, not the nightly rate: cleaning, seasonal surcharges or minimum stays change the sums. And remember that in villages with festivals or in high season prices go up and availability vanishes — booking ahead isn't fussiness, it's the difference between choosing your accommodation and settling for what's left.
